Discover a Hidden Treasure
This Old Town is a hidden treasure, and one of the UNESCO Creative Cities. From the main road all you can see is what looks like an old stone wall. We almost missed it driving by. For some reason we decided to come back this way later in the day. We could not believe what we saw. A small, very old village nestled inside thick stone walls. At the far end of the Old Town is a well-preserved medieval Castle. These were some of my first photographs and you can see the light and other aspects are not the best.
Day 1 – Make a Plan
The “golden” hours are nature’s most flattering light for taking pictures. If you arrive late afternoon, take a 40-minute stroll around town. Check out the buildings and decide which ones you will photograph. Make a short list noting which photo’s you will take after sunrise and which photos are best before sunset.
- The Golden Hours: 30-40 minutes after sunrise and before sunset.
Check “google” for mouth-watering places to eat. I have recommended places to stay at the bottom of the post. We stayed at Josefa d’Obidos Hotel. It was okay, but I would try somewhere different next time.

Day 2 – After Sunrise and Before Sunset
Pictures after sunrise and before sunset, but what about the rest of the day? Foz do Arelho Beach is a 25-minute drive from Obidos to the west. The City of Caldas da Rainha is 15 minutes north. After breakfast you can head north and check out Caldas da Rainha Outdoor Market. We found some amazing soft cheese at this market. The City of Caldas da Rainha is also part of the UNESCO Creative Cities network. It is known for its rich activity in the areas of arts, design, crafts and innovation. After you have finished exploring the City and Parque Dom Carlos I, you can move on to Fox do Arelho Beach. The perfect day to be happy. Don’t forget to head back to Obidos in time to capture the desired photos before sunset.
